Recommendations for ideal server set up?

    I’m seeking advice from those familiar with servers:

    I’m migrating a very large blog over from another service to WordPress. In the course of looking for a new host, it’s been decided that a dedicated server is probably preferred. The company I’m going with will manage the server and offer support, but they’ve asked how I would like it set up. I’m sure they will offer advice, but I’d like to get some thoughts from those in the WP community. 🙂

    I know that we want a LAMP environment, with the latest versions, and the Apache rewrite module… but are there other recommendations? It’d be great if anyone can share how they’ve set up their server to run efficiently with WP. For example, I want to make sure that we can upgrade and install plugins from the WP Admin area. I’ve read things about the suPHP module helping with this?

    By default, you should already have the ability to install/upgrade WordPress and WordPress plugins from the Dashboard, no need for suPHP.

    We recently tested out a semi-managed server solution and experienced an array of issues, including with that feature. The Admin panel repeatedly asked for FTP login – and at times did not work. Additionally, it is not really ideal to share the full FTP password with everyone who works on our blog.

    I just spoke with a support member at Liquidweb, where I’m considering purchasing a VPS to start off with and migrating to a fully dedicated server when needed. I posed the question regarding updates, etc, and was told that suPHP would handle it. I’ve seen others on the WP forums mention that suPHP helped them as well.

    “suPHP allows PHP scripts to run as the account owner, and not as Apache, so you avoid all the issues with ownership/permissions that are common with many CMS products.”
