• I became the website coordinator of this page about a year ago. We have been having issues with a plug in not updating and our treasurer was trying to get our account sorted with them to fix things. One page wasn’t working, but the rest of the site was fine. Today we received an email saying we have a fatal error and to use the recovery mode to access our dashboard. However, when we click that link, we get the “Recovery Mode not Initialized” error.

Because I slid into an existing role, I don’t know if the recovery mode was set up initially. I have no contact information for the original website creators.

I would appreciate any idea of where to go from here.

    Thanks,

    Heather

  • Do you have access to the hosting platform? Is there a backup of the website that you know of?

Working on getting access now. I think I know the steps I have to take once I have access. We know which plugin is the problem, so I will remove that folder then reinstall.

We always backup the website before updating any plugins. Not sure if that’s what you mean.

“Recovery Mode not initialized” indicates WP did not receive the necessary security token from the URL provided in the email. It’s unclear why it’s missing, but it’s likely because of the initial error. In any case, recovery mode is sometimes less than useful. Hosting account access or at least FTP access will be much more useful than recovery mode.

Fortunately, you know the problem plugin and how to disable it. You’re on the right track, don’t be concerned about uninitialized recovery mode.

Errors like this are logged. Check the error log on your server. If you can’t find the log, please contact your host.

Meantime, enable wp_debug and wp_debug_log and after an error, look at wp-content/debug.log to see if anything gets logged there. https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/article/debugging-in-wordpress/

You can also try this: Please attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

If you cannot access wp-admin, there are other ways to deactivate plugins:  https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/article/faq-troubleshooting/#how-to-deactivate-all-plugins-when-not-able-to-access-the-administrative-menus
