rectangles behind icons

I’m suddenly getting these weird colored rectangles behind fontawesome icons in my sidebar widgets. I’ve tried playing around with the CSS to no avail. My only guess is it has something to do with the icons themselves being links? I’m using the “i” tags and surrounding those with link tags, basically. Here’s a screen shot of the weirdness:
