recurring payments had failed for multiple users

Hi Guys,
We recently received notifications through the system for 5 different people that their PayPal recurring payments had failed. Looking at the individuals, it seems a varied mix of people who have not subscribed for a few years, and people who should still be active as their payment has been taken within the past month so were not due for a renewal anyway.
Our client believes that all of them paid last months subscription and none cancelled so there may be an additional issue going on also. All were moved to the free membership plan on the 18th March after the emails were received even though as I mentioned some were definitely within the subscription period still.
Would you be able to provide some light on this and put in place fixes if required.
