Redirect if unvalidated

On my site with clean login we have the setting “Validate user registration through an email?” enabled. However a user that is unvalidated can still login and has the same privileges as a validated user. So my question is how do I not redirect them to the page validated users get redirected to, and instead return a message saying “Please wait to be validated” or some sort.
