Can I also have a statement on the defect – eg ‘when I do this then that happens when I would expect this to happen’
I am sorry I missed your reply Robin, I just meant that I was having a problem that two others had expressed previously where thy couldn’t find a solution.

I think it’s sorted.
I had checked to show forums headings to users where the group did not have access. So users not allowed to read the forum still saw the forum name. I unchecked that. (under forum visibility – activate – clicked to activate forum visibility).
Also I downloaded Peter’s Login Redirect plug in.
It’s working as intended now though we had a cache issue for a while. I solved that (hopefully) by deleting and recreating the greetings page.
I’m sorry I can’t pinpoint exactly what the solution was but it seemed to be a combination of both. Having the cache issue made it more complicated.
