It won’t allow users to register with all the information I want. It continuously refreshes the page. It only works with username, email and password. If I want different content for each role there’s no way to separate them via registration. If a user selects their role at the profile, he can edit his profile to a different roles to gain access to content that I would not someone in his original role to have access to.

You don’t have to add roles filed to your registration form.
Please attach the screenshot of your registration form so we can better understand this issue.
Please also do a quick conflict test so we can rule out conflicts with your theme or one of your plugin and see if this issue goes away.
Here is the doc on how to do a conflict test if you are not sure how to do it.

Here’s a snap shot of my registration form. Registration issue
Once it’s filled out and I press ‘register’ it refreshes back to this page with everything filled out instead of creating the membership. There are no conflicts when I did a conflict test.
