• We use the Custom Content Shortcode plugin extensively on our website, including to build query loops in page content. I am no longer able to index the site with “expand shortcodes” checked, the process goes slower and slower and then hangs at around 400 (out of 1200). When I indexed without expanding shortcodes it worked although slowly (7 hours for 1200 posts), but since there a number of pages where most of the content is generated by CCS shortcodes this isn’t a viable option for us. How do I get this to work?

The indexing without shortcodes is super slow – Relevanssi should be able to index 1200 posts in minutes. Based on that, I’m getting a feeling Relevanssi probably isn’t a good match for your site. Perhaps something that spiders your visible pages, like AddSearch, would work better for you?

Getting Relevanssi to work with your site would require some work with the CCS shortcodes: some of those need to be removed, most likely, at least query loops sound pretty bad for Relevanssi purposes. But since the indexing without shortcodes is that slow, I’m not sure it’s worth the effort.

Thanks for the info. Is there any way for us to track down what’s making indexing so slow even without the shortcodes? That would help us figure out what solutions might work. Also, is there a way to figure out which page(s) indexing hangs on? AddSearch looks good, but adding an enterprise-level service is not an option for us at this time.

You can probably tell where the indexing hangs: just reindex everything and when it hangs, you can reload the indexing page to see the lowest post ID indexed. Relevanssi indexes in descending order, so the problem page is the one with the next ID number downwards.

As for the general slowness, that’s harder to track down. It may be general server slowness, come from your database, be related to your plugins and so on. Eliminating possible causes one at the time, adding time-tracking debugging code in the Relevanssi indexing process, something like that may help, but it’s a lot of work.
