You may refer to the following steps to make the field optional on the registration form by referring to the following steps:
1) Login to the WordPress dashboard and go to the ProfileGrid menu.
2) All Groups will be listed here, then go to the group Fields for a group.
3) Next, you will see the list of fields for that group. You can edit, delete or add fields from here.
5) To make the field optional disable the option “Required?” in field settings

Wasn’t easy to find. You have to tick the box next to the group name and then you see a field button. I found it though finally. Maybe future change to make it a menu item instead?
Especially considering its names Profile field Manager but have to go into groups to get there.
