    Hi there,

I’ve noticed that your plugin adds ‘-scaled’ to images if I have ‘Max dimensions’ set.
Is there a way to stop the ‘-scaled’ part being added?

    Thank you for your help.

    Hello,

Currently, the ‘-scaled’ suffix cannot be removed from uploaded image titles.

The ‘-scaled’ suffix was introduced in WordPress 5.3 as part of the ‘Big Image Threshold’ mechanism. When an uploaded image exceeds a certain size (defaulting to 2560px), WordPress automatically generates a version optimized for web display and treats it as the ‘Full’ size image.

Currently, the ‘Max Dimensions’ feature in CompressX generates a resized version of the primary image and appends the ‘-scaled’ suffix, consistent with WordPress core behavior. This approach preserves the original high-resolution image, prevents overwriting, and avoids potential caching or compatibility issues. We do not currently offer an option to remove the ‘-scaled’ tag, as doing so would risk overwriting original files or causing caching conflicts.

When ‘Max dimensions’ is enabled and an uploaded image exceeds the threshold (e.g., 2560px), the plugin automatically generates a resized version of the main image. This serves several purposes:

    • Optimizes Performance: Reduces frontend file size and improves loading speeds.
    • Prevents Server Errors: Avoids memory exhaustion or timeouts when generating thumbnails, WebP, or AVIF files from oversized originals.
    • Stability: Maintains consistent ‘Full Size’ image handling within the WordPress Media Library.

The ‘-scaled’ suffix is simply a filename marker indicating that this is the resized primary image. The original large file is still preserved and recorded in the metadata.

This logic is identical to how WordPress handles large images natively. CompressX simply incorporates this threshold and behavior into its own resize functionality.

    Kind regards.

    Hi @johnghiz,

Thank you for getting back to me!

I think I misunderstood what the ‘Max dimensions’ setting does.
My assumption was that it replaces any image uploaded that has dimensions larger than those set (I have 720px height set), with a version scaled to the desired size.

But your saying it keeps the original over-sized image and creates a scaled version as well, with the scaled version used as the primary image… is that right?

I was previously using the Imsanity plugin which does exactly what I was expecting, but when I saw that your plugin seemed to offer the same function I figured I could remove Imasanity.

Unfortunately the process I use for bulk uploading products requires that the image titles aren’t changed, as doing so means the bulk products can;t find the images to add to the products.

    Follow up question then:

If I’m using Imsanity to resize images as they’re uploaded, will your AVIF & WebP Converter still convert them them for me?
I just want to make sure there waon;t be any potential conflicts between your plugins in possible.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Hello,

If you use another plugin to resize your images first and disable the ‘Max dimensions’ setting in CompressX, you can then run the CompressX functions normally. CompressX will detect the current image dimensions and proceed with the conversion.

    Kind regards.

    Hi @johnghiz,

    Perfect thank you.
Any chance of adding the option to replace oversized image uploads using the ‘Max dimensions’ settings rather keeping the oversized image and created a new scaled version?
As an additional feature rather than a replacement for the existing ‘Max dimensions’ setting.

Having the extra option inside CompressX rather than requiring an additional plugin would be awesome 🙂

    Thanks again for your help!

    Hi @johnghiz,

Is this in the lastest version changelog, what I was asking for?

    Changelog 0.9.35

    • Added a feature of replacing an image in your media library by uploading a new image.

If so, amazing! But also, I’m not seeing it as a setting… can you confirm where I need to go to active it please?

    Thank you!
