You mean to only have a category filter to show the locations? This is not supported at the moment, but will come in the next update.
The reason you need the input is that whatever you search for is converted into a set of coordinates and used to find nearby locations in the database. Categories themselves don’t have coordinates tied to them, so it won’t work at the moment, but will change in this in the future.
With Google Maps icons you mean the zoom / streetview icons? Some can be removed on the settings page with the ‘Show the street view controls’ and ‘Show the map type control?’ option.

Thanks for getting back to me, and I’ll be excited to see that. My issue is that I’d like to only see only the map with road names, the stores I myself have entered. I have turned off most of the options in the Map section but I still get Google duplicates of the stores I have entered manually. Obviously, I could only enter the locations that haven’t been provided by Google but that’s not ideal.
How far away do you think those improvements will be?
All the best,
B
If you want to remove businesses from showing up on the map, then you can do this by creating a custom map with this tool ( point of interest -> Business ).
The map style has to go in the ‘map style’ textarea

Thank you Tijmen,
I can see how to add the Visiblity but am I making a .styles or a StyledMapType?

I’m getting the hang of this, slowly but surely. Now I just need to enter my shop data. It brings up a couple of other questions. Firstly, I paste in DD coordinates from Google Earth Pro, but I need to strip the degree symbol (°) every time. Otherwise, Store Locator behaves as though I haven’t pasted in coordinates (and just goes by the address). This is fine if store entries are spaced out but no good in a market where lots of individual stores need to share one road address. Could I ask if perhaps having different coloured flags for your store categories is in your planning, or if it could be? 🙂
Thanks again,
B
How to set custom category markers is explained in this article.
You also have to address details, or only the coordinates from Google Earth with the degree symbol? If you just fill in the address and click on the map preview button, then it will grab the coordinates from Google.
