Yeah, you can rip out what you like. There’s even a plugin that’ll do it for you 🙂
I think the problem would arise if you then released your hacked wordpress as a competitor to wordpress.

I’m a new open source user. Please let me know if it’s all right to remove fromn the orignal template we are creating the default WordPress content in the dashboard of WordPress 2.0 that includes the WordPress development blog and the other WordPress News and the BrowseHappy links?
