well, as I had the first suggested link in my question and had already reviewed the second suggestion and discarded it, I decided to suck it up and have a go myself. Here is the answer.

Follow the instructions in the ‘changing the site url’ article above to change the ‘WordPress address’ and the ‘site address’. That is all- ignore the complicated stuff under that!

At this point I lost contact with the site, and after editing a redirect I had set up in cpanel, eventually managed to log back in at

servicemax.com.au/wp-login.php

I then installed this plugin
http://ww.wp.xz.cn/extend/plugins/velvet-blues-update-urls/

and had the image urls and other all updated in about 2 seconds. I hope this information helps someone else, thank you.
