Renaming Site Address breaks some functionality

I have WordPress installed in a directory called wp. After setting up the site, I wanted the site to display at domain.com instead of domain.com/wp, so I followed the directions provided by WordPress to do so. It seemed to work, but when I try to edit a page, it won’t update (clicking the button does nothing) and I can’t revert it to Draft either. The WordPress icon in the upper right corner that takes you out of editing is missing as well, but clicking the button still works. Changing the Site Address back to /wp makes the functionality work again.

I followed the provided instructions twice and got the same results, so I’m not sure what I’m missing. I use Bluehost. I don’t use Pretty Permalinks (that’s a plugin, right? I didn’t see it anywhere), so I didn’t edit the .htaccess file. I also went to Permalinks and hit “Save Changes” for good measure. Any tips on figuring out what I did wrong?

You should either move the WordPress installation into the root directory (i.e. one level above the current /wp/ directory): https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-properly-move-wordpress-from-subdomain-to-root-domain/

Or add make a .htaccess file backup and then a redirect to the file: https://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/358051/redirect-from-sub-directory-to-root-new-wordpress-5-2-3-set-up

Unless you have a reason for using the /wp/ directory, the first option is preferable and will lead to a slightly faster site load.

Any tips on figuring out what I did wrong?

What specific instructions did you follow? More importantly, what exact steps did you take? Perhaps something was lost in translation?

I don’t use Pretty Permalinks (that’s a plugin, right? I didn’t see it anywhere)

There is Permalinks, which is a WordPress feature that gives pretty URLs. Then there is “Pretty Links”, which is a plugin. Yes, I know: it can be confusing.

Thank you barnez for the suggestion! I was hoping to avoid that, but if it’s going to run faster anyway, I guess I should do it.

The problem seems to have resolved itself! It now redirects to the root directory without me having to transfer all the files there. I’m guessing it may have been a caching issue? Anyway, marking as resolved.
