We’re still experiencing a huge flaw regarding the unavailability of the option to change the payment method for recurring payments with Mollie Payments for WooCommerce. The earlier thread could be found here: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/topic/recurring-payment-problem-change-payment-method/

We tested and still see no option for customers to change their payment method. For recurring payments, customers have to provide a mandate by maken a (small) payment. If a merchant changes the payment method, this mandate would not be created. In my opinion, the only thing that solves the problem is the ‘Customer change payment method’ feature. Could you provide an update? Thanks in advance.

    Hello @jaron0

thank you for reaching out to us, we are here to help.
I just reviewed the backlog and it is correct what you are saying: at this moment we only fixed the problem for the merchants, but the customers are still not able to change the payment method.

We do have a feature request open for this, but it was not resolved yet. I spoke with our developer and was told this was on the shortlist for being added, but it won’t be in the next release yet. We hope it will be added within the next 2 releases, but we can’t give you any certainties regarding this.

I hope this answers your question. Let me know if you have any more for us.

    Kind regards,
    Joost

    Hi @joostvandevijver,

Thank you for your answer. We hope that this feature will be added soon, as it a huge missing for the subscription’s use case. I’ve heard so from a lot of other people too. However, I’m glad that you’ve put it on the shortlist and that it will be released soon. Looking forward to it. Have a nice day.

    Hi @jaron0,

This feature is quite complex as it involves special handling for multiple cases, and every gateway has different requirements.

For now, we added the possibility to change the payment method for the subscription from the admin backend through the store manager: https://github.com/mollie/WooCommerce/wiki/WooCommerce-Subscriptions#changing-payment-method
The user does not yet have a “change payment” button in the my-account section.
For example, when the user started the subscription with credit cards but wants to switch to a different method, you can create a pending renewal order which allows the buyer to make a payment with a new payment method. When the subscription payment method is changed (from the backend) to the one used for the renewal payment, subsequent subscription renewals will use the new method.
This way, you could also switch between different payment methods with saved mandates, though there is no interface yet to see which gateways have a saved payment method.

There is more to this than just the “change payment” button, but we’re working on providing this functionality in one of the next few updates, though it may take another update or two before we can share more details.

    Kind regards,
    Niklas

Thank you for your extensive explanation. It’s now clear what’s the workaround for customers that want to switch to another payment method. We’re excited to see this feature in customers’ accounts as well in the future.

I’ve got one more question. Although it’s clear how an admin could change the payment method (let’s say from Creditcard to iDeal), I’m curious if there’s a workaround to change the same payment method as well. For example, someone’s Creditcard is expired and that person wants to give a mandate for his/her new Creditcard. Is it possible for an admin to change this as well, or do we have to wait for the ‘Customer change payment method’ feature? Thanks in advance.

    Hi @jaron0,

When an automatic renewal payment fails, the user has the opportunity to pay with a new payment method which will also be used for automatic renewals. In such a scenario, the user can fully switch the payment method themself.
The user could also perform an early renewal payment with the new credit card. And when the old card expires before the next renewal, the renewal should automatically work with the new credit card without the admin interfering at all.

It is possible to have multiple mandates per payment method, but there is currently no interface to view or manage these mandates, so it’s difficult for a user (or the admin) to actively switch between different saved credit cards, for example.
But there is a set of features we are working on to provide the buyer will all relevant options to manage saved payment methods.

    Kind regards,
    Niklas

    Hello,

since we have not received a follow-up question and are not expecting the feature for the customer changing payment method to be available very soon, we will mark this thread as resolved. If this thread allows it (since after some time, they get blocked for updates) we will let you know when this feature becomes available.

    Kind regards,
    Joost
