    I am not entirely clear the difference between
    two replacement options.

    I’ve read the “tips” but I don’t understand when I would want to use one vs the other.
    Seems to be I would always want all links updated. In what scenario would I not want the links to my image updated as well?

    Not necessarily with images, but other files. On one of my sites we have a lot of PDF files for download. When one of them is updated, we don’t want to change the URL, since people have linked to them.
