Replacing images

I have a gallery of images which when I uploaded didn’t realise how large the files are which are taking up a fair bit of space on my server.
What is like to know is, if I deleted the images and uploaded same name smaller sized images to the same image dated folder would that work fine? Would the new images be shown instead?
