I have a site built in muse, currently live. I would like to convert it to wordpress, and use the plugin MWuse – Adobe Muse Converter.

In order to do any of this, I have to install wordpress for the domain, but when I try to use the install tool through hostgator, it fails because the site is live.

What is the correct way to transition from Muse to WordPress on the same domain?
I use WP-Staging, but even that requires having a wordpress install for both staging and actual domains.

    Please advise. Thanks!

Try installing on a subdomain instead, like new.motorcityfilms.com (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for creating subdomains).

You can build the site there, while the old site remains live at motorcityfilms.com

Then, when you’re ready, move the new site over following this guide: https://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Moving_WordPress#Moving_Directories_On_Your_Existing_Server

    Here’s the issue I’m having:

I know how to use a subdomain and build the new site there. But, I have a membership to WP-Staging, which lets me push changes from a staging site to a live site (to avoid the hassle of moving directories myself). The problem with that is in order to use the plugin, I need it installed on both the staging and live sites (through wordpress).

So…I guess I’m still wondering how to install wordpress for the live site domain?

Check with WP-Staging, but you should be able to still move everything after the fact once the site launches.
