• I know this should be easy information to find by Googling. But I have searched and cannot find the answer to this.

Does anyone know approximately how much reserve disk space is needed in order for wordpress to update?

I am trying to update wordpress and it fails with a “cannot copy file” error. I know sometimes limited disk space causes this error, but I have over 50mb free space.
Is this enough free space for an update? Should I try to get more storage space or would there be another cause to the problem?

    Thanks.

  • 50mb is not enough space to update automatically like that.

Think about the file sizes involved and the process. First, the WordPress ZIP file needs to be downloaded, and then all of the files need ot be extracted and copied across.

The WordPress ZIP file (as of now) is 23.2mb (the update will be slightly smaller, but not much). Uncopmressed, it’s around 62mb of files. That’s already over 85mb before the update process actually starts.

If you’re having problems, I’d recommend doing a manual update via FTP. That way you’ll just over-write files instead of needing to download and unzip packages.
