Return icon unicode

Hello, I’m looking for a way to retrieve the icon’s unicode, cause I’m using the php function tax_icons_output_term_icon to inject a css style script in the header of a page, to use it as a pseudo-element (::before) displaying the icons on my categories; but I get an <i> tag with the fa class as a return of that function. Is there a way to get it’s unicode instead? Can you please help me with this one? ^^
