Ripening Gutenberg
-
I did see the ‘try our new editor’ notice in the Dashboard of sites I manage during 2018. Never thought it would actually REPLACE the page editor. That was a shock.
Tried using Gutenberg after updating one site to 5.0
I thought “well, it will be good for Columns on full width pages”.
Tried using Columns, found no controls for padding, etc. Looked awful. Goodbye Columns.
Thought the big image with overlay heading looked good. Found no option for headings on it, just bold paragraph text. Changing html to h2 heading not allowed. Goodbye to that.
All my managed sites wanted to stay Classic Editor, so left Gutenberg to ‘ripen’ a bit.
This week I thought, “I should try it again.”
Same problems with the standard Blocks. Ugly spacing, not enough controls.
Installed a Plugin that added custom Blocks (Am I allowed to mention the Plugin’s name?)
Aha! I have Columns with padding and other controls.
I am now willing to be a Blockhead.
Two stars, because I see that the included Blocks are actually hobbling acceptance of Gutenberg, but there is the hope that 3rd parties will remedy that.
I appreciate the work that went into Gutenberg, and promise to update my review after my next interaction with it.
