I had my website updated from HTML to PHP in the summer of 2010, and in that process I had my developer add a blog page to the existing website. Apparently the developer installed a copy of WP into the directory that would contain the blog page, and the single blog page was created. When I log on to wp-admin, only a single page is recognized.

I like the ease of functionality within WordPress so much that I now would like to redesign my entire website within a WordPress theme, and have just purchased the rights to a theme. I understand I should build the new website in a separate, test folder. Do I need to download and install a separate copy of WordPress into that test directory?

This should be self evident, but I don’t wish to do anything that will screw up the functionality of my existing blog page. I’d like my existing site to remain fully functional until I’ve fully constructed and tested the new site and am ready to switch over.

Thank you! in advance for any help you can provide.

    John

I should add that the domain that will contain the new website is a subdomain.

If it makes a difference, the new test folder can be located either underneath the subdomain folder on my webhost (but not directly underneath the folder that currently contains an install of WP), or it can be in a separate folder under my primary domain, completely unrelated to my subdomain.

This note can be closed. I went ahead and dropped a fresh install in off the root domain, and I’m up and running.
