safely backup edited theme

    Hi, I am new to WordPress so this may seem a very basic question.

    If I choose a theme to use and then go ahead and make changes to this, will there be any danger of losing settings, the look and feel or anything else whenever an update is applied?

    I did read up on backing up your files but again was unsure of the best method to do so.
