When I upload new images to the Media Library, I’m getting different results when uploading the same image multiple times. For example, I uploaded the same image and got similar results: 162KB 800×600, but one is larger than the other in the image preview. The one that appears larger in the image preview is also more clear and can be used at a larger size in my post. This is the result I want – an image under 200KB that remains at a decent resolution when placed in my post.

The images that are appearing smaller in the preview window of the Media library cannot be sized any larger than the preview without becoming grainy.

This is a new issue – previously all my images were uploading without issue at under 200KB and with a fairly large preview size. Hope this makes sense.

    Thanks,
    Karin

Okay, first I have to say that 162kb sounds HUGE for an 800×600 image. So lets start with this, what settings do you have set in Imsanity? A screenshot of them would be fantastic, making sure to include all 3 sets of dimensions and the JPG quality specifically.

Hi, so I’m not seeing where to upload a screenshot but here are the settings:

    Images uploaded within a Page/Post
    Max Width 500
    Max Height 500

Images uploaded directly to the Media Library
    Max Width 800
    Max Height 800

Images uploaded elsewhere (Theme headers, backgrounds, logos, etc)
    Max Width 500
    Max Height 500

    JPG image quality
    92
    Valid values are 1-100.

Okay, that’s helpful, still really surprising to see that large of an image at quality 92, but you can dig into that later if you like (could be another plugin has a similar setting).

So, are you usually uploading direct to the media library (Media->Add new) or is it often while editing a post/page, or some of both?

Then, if you could provide links to two of the uploads for the same image where you are seeing such a huge difference, that would be helpful too.

P.S. while you can’t upload screenshots directly here, there are dozens of free photo sharing sites (like https://pasteboard.co/) where you can upload an image and just post the links here.
