Should the plugin honor the published status of a post? It appears that if the shortcode is used to include content from a post scheduled in the future, the content is displayed immediately.

You are correct. The new version 1.0.16 now includes this check so that included content that does not have a status of ‘publish’ will not be displayed. Thank you for the feedback and hope you continue to find RPS Include Content useful.
