Search widget results layout problem

I have inserted a search widget into the menu bar which looks great but when used it generates an odd list of results with another random search bar appearing underneath the search results window.

How can i customise the search results and how they appear? The site is not yet live (still on local server) as I want to correct this problem first. I can send a screenshot if needed.
