Secure File Attachments for Private Forums

Is there a way to add a layer of protection on file attachments for Private Forums?

I’m building a Private Discussion Board for a small number of users. If logged in users attach any files to their replies in Private Forums, the files get uploaded to the Media Library and can potentially be discovered by others by guessing the filenames and typing them into the address bar.

I want the files to be only downloadable for logged in users, what’s the best way to do that?

Right now, there is no protection of files, because they are in the media library, and WordPress lacks private files for the media library. I plan to implement files protection as a separate plugin (for forums and other stuff), it is a very complicated issue to solve, and something like would be better suited for WordPress core, but that is unlikely to happen any time soon.
