Personally I use WordFence. I think it’s fantastic even at the free level. There are a few other good ones too, but that is just the one I happen to use. There are a number of steps a person should take to protect a site from intrusion: http://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Hardening_WordPress
I should be doing more, but I follow most of these steps and seem able to automatically fend off pretty much any attempt.
