I started out with a free wp.com website with Sela theme. I am converting to wp.org and I’d like to stick with the Sela theme but it’s totally different.

What’s up with that? Did I do it wrong? 😛

    vs
    saynotothescale.xyz

The front page of the wp.com page doesn’t have a sidebar navigation and my xyz site does. Also notice the dots are missing in the banner nav.

No widget area on the xyz site (no option to add them either).

I like the layout of the blog page just fine… but I want the home page to look like the wp.com site. I’m just wondering why the .com stuff is better? Will fixing this involve tons of HTML and CSS work? *crossing fingers for no*

For the layout, it looks like you still need to select the Front Page template from the Page Attributes box on your homepage:

    Edit Page Sela WordPress

You can also add widgets to the three Front Page widget areas under Appearance > Widgets. You also have some footer widgets as well.

If you’d like access to some of the WordPress.com features, including widget visibility, a contact form, email subscriptions, sharing buttons, and lots more, I’d suggest you activate the Jetpack plugin and connect your WordPress.com account to it. That’ll give you many of the features you’re used to from your WordPress.com site.

I’ll check on the dots between menu items and get back to you.

Oh, hm. I didn’t know that was a thing with the attributes. Thanks!

I did try to add the widgets in the widgets section under customize bar but nothing happens when I change it.

I haven’t set up all my plug ins yet… I guess that WOULD help.

Jetpack fixed the widgets… I probably can figure out the dots thing buy using Firebug.

The dots missing between items in a default menu is actually a bug, so thanks for reporting it! I’ve let our developers know and we’ll post here when it’s been fixed. In testing, I discovered that it only affects the default menu, so if you go to Appearance > Menus and add a custom menu to the Primary Menu area, you should get the dots back.

Let me know if you need further help setting up your front page.

Thanks a lot!! I’ll try it out.

Looks like the custom menu did the trick!

Our developers have made the fix in the theme and it will be included in the next version of Sela.
