Select fields lose previously selected value when submitting form

I’m creating a registration form where we ask for billing address fields and at the end some questions with pre-set answers via select fields, and upon submitting the form, when any field has a validation error, the submitted form values are filled in for text inputs, but the billing_country and the custom select fields all reset to their default empty value
