Hi. I seem to be having an issue with this plugin’s compatibility with the WordPress block editor. My page images are in visual blocks, not HTML. Whenever I try to optimize my images with Alt text via the editor (or even simply click on the image block, for that matter), the image block breaks on the backend and I’m left with a “This block has encountered an error and cannot be previewed” message. Thus, I cannot add Alt text and have to refresh the page without saving to make the image block work again.

I’m certain it’s the Yoast’s SEO plugin causing the error because I disabled all my plugins on my staging site (process of elimination). Reinabling them one by one, I only had the issue when I reenabled this plugin. Any solution for this?? (Wondering if there is an easier fix without having to reconfigure my whole site with HTML images…I’m still learning the ropes.)

  • Hi @solifewebbuilder5,

Thanks for taking the time to test this. We tried to add alt text to an image block, but we didn’t see any problem with only Yoast SEO enabled and using a default WordPress theme. This leads us to believe that there’s a conflict with another plugin or theme on your site.

Below are a few questions to help us troubleshoot the issue.

    1. Are you using the latest version of Yoast SEO 14.9 and WordPress 5.4 or greater? Does updating solve the problem?

    2. Are all your other plugins and themes updated?

    3. Can you confirm that this is a default WordPress “Image” block and not a different block type added by a third-party plugin or theme, for example?

    4. Can you confirm that you’re adding the image alt text following the steps in this guide: https://yoast.com/image-seo-alt-tag-and-title-tag-optimization/?

    5. Do you see any JavaScript errors when you edit a page? If so, please send us screenshots of the error. This guide explains more about how to check your browser’s console: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/how-to-find-javascript-errors-with-your-browsers-console/.

    Hi @priscillamc,

    1. Yes, I am using the lasted versions of WordPress (v5.5) and Yoast SEO (v14.9).

    2. All my other plugins are updated as well.

    3. Yes, it is WordPress image blocks being affected. Although, I do also have Creative Blocks installed (which was recommended and made by my theme creator), and CoBlocks (which was installed by GoDaddy, where I have the Managed WordPress set up).

    4. Yes, I know to follow these instructions, but that’s the issue… the image blocks are breaking and not allowing me to add an alt description to the sidebar in the block tab. I can’t even access the sidebar to add alt text. And this issue is on every page.

    5. I don’t see errors, but I do see warnings, for example, on the About page are the following:
DevTools failed to load SourceMap: Could not load content for https://img1.wsimg.com/tcc/tcc_l.combined.1.0.6.min.js.map: HTTP error: status code 404, net::ERR_HTTP_RESPONSE_CODE_FAILURE

You know what, @priscillamc … After I responded back to you, I thought about your question concerning third-party block plugins. I went back and did some more process of elimination and figured out the problem. Again, all my plugins played nicely together when Yoast’s SEO wasn’t activated, but when Yoast’s SEO was activated, my image blocks started breaking. Well, I disabled each third-party block plugin one at a time to see which one Yoast’s SEO didn’t like (caused it to break). It ended up being the Creative Blocks plugin (by KeonThemes) that I mentioned above. I disabled it (luckily I hadn’t actually used any of their blocks in my page designs), and problem fixed!!

However, I’m still getting those warnings that I mentioned above in the browser console. Not sure what they mean, but that’s probably a whole different topic?

    Hi @solifewebbuilder5,

Thank you for both of your replies and for troubleshooting! It’s always good to find the culprit. We’re not familiar with the plugin however, if you do plan on using it in the near future, we’d recommend reaching out to the plugin developer to investigate the conflict.

For your other concern about the warnings you get. It looks like the page you are checking loads resources from a CDN that is not there (anymore). You get 404 errors meaning that the files are not there. We would recommend checking the plugin or integration you have with that CDN to resolve it.

@jeroenrotty Absolutely…now that I know that plugin is the culprit, I know to reach out to them if necessary. However, no need. I can get along just fine without it.

I’m fairly new to some of these terms, but I will look into what’s going on with those warnings based on the advice/info you just gave. Thanks a bunch for responding.

You’re welcome. If you have any other questions, just let us know and we’ll be happy to help. Please know that we’ll close this topic if it has no activity for 1 week. You can always open up a new topic.

    Closing. No further concerns.
