Server Overload from IP visits?

    Hello,

    Tonight I was attacked I think… My website suddenly started receiving visits from IP addresses all around the world within just a few minutes time. They wouldn’t stop, the IP address that visited the website was never the same.

    It got to the point where my servers went down from basically being overloaded… How is this happening and how can I stop it? My website is not popular whatsoever, just a small town wordpress website that is designed for Work At Home Moms.

    Is there a way to prevent this?

    Thanks for your prompt response but not sure that’s my problem? Or is it as simple as fixing my permalinks and such? Or am I misunderstanding the article?

    See what happened is at 3:15 my time, I received a visit from a IP address in Iraq. They used Google Translator to view and obviously translate the website to their language. They visited the website for about 10 minutes and then suddenly I started receiving visits from IP addresses all throughout the world.

    Within 10 minutes of the first visit, I suddenly had 100’s of visits from IP addresses located all around the world. No one IP address hit the website more than once. It was always a new IP address.

    Then suddenly it got so over-whelming that my server crashed and restarted. I was told this is called “spoofing” but don’t really understand how they manage to do that to my website. I’ve been explained to that they pinged the website to overload my server. Whether it was personal or not, I do not know, but what I do know is that they will NOT stop.

    Everytime I open my WordPress website, within hours they are back at it again doing it all over again.

    How do I stop this? Can someone please help me? This is really beginning to become frustrating and about ready to do the one thing I don’t want to do… Change to a different website, HTML or something so I can avoid such problems.
