  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress?

    – increasing the available memory?

Thanks, esmi. Unfortunately none of your suggestions worked.

It looks like my installation is indeed cursed. One thing I did notice is that the line numbers on which the errors occurred changed when I altered which plugins were enabled.

I’ll try another random theme and see if that makes any difference.

Any ideas about the fact that the Custom Field “thumb” also fails? If that could work then the “Set featured image” failure wouldn’t matter so much.

I’ve now abandoned trying to set up WordPress on my local computer. From what I’ve read it should work but in my case it doesn’t.

Having switched to the remote web server the “Set featured image” function works perfectly, as do other things that did not locally.
