• i have recently created a subdomain for a “members only” site. I have attempted to map this subdomain to my multisite network however i’m not sure i have it set up correctly. While the subdomain appears in the sites list on my multi site install when i try to access the subdomain site it diverts me to login to the separate WP install (which is non-multi site). I think I’ve missed a vital step in the process.

  • Multisite is based on one set of files that are located in the folder on your server where your domain points to. This is where in the root of your domain you will have all of the WordPress files installed. If on your server you also have a subdomain pointing to another folder, then you won’t be able to use that subdomain in your multisite. To get a subdomain to resolve to the multisite, you can point the subdomain to the same folder that the naked domain points to, ie the root where your WordPress files are installed. Typically, though one creates a wildcard domain on your server pointing to this folder. In this way, any subdomain that you create with the MultiSite will resolve to that folder. So, probably the best thing would be to delete the subdomain created on your server and just let multisite do its magic.
