Share counts inaccurate?
-
There was very little news about it on the internet but is it true that newest Facebook API disabled Sharecount like twitter did?
It seems like only direct clicks on the sharebar from my website change the counter now.
For example the share bar for facebook says 3: http://factoverfallacy.com/info/happy-marriage-abstinence/
However, not to long ago, comments, likes and shares all moved the bar number. Just on my page https://www.facebook.com/Factoverfallacy/posts/176587296079510, I have over 60 likes and 30 comments.
I noticed the same with google plus too. Did a lot of sites change or is this an error?

Facebook FQL recently got deprecated that our plugin used to fetch share counts. Now our plugin uses graph API for this purpose.
For example, for the url you have mentioned, following link returns 3 share counts:
http://graph.facebook.com/?id=http://factoverfallacy.com/info/happy-marriage-abstinence/It seems like only direct clicks on the sharebar from my website change the counter now.
No, it should be a successful share for counter to be increased.
However, not to long ago, comments, likes and shares all moved the bar number. Just on my page https://www.facebook.com/Factoverfallacy/posts/176587296079510, I have over 60 likes and 30 comments.
Number of likes and shares of your Facebook page are different than that of your webpage. If you are seeing a difference in number of shares, it might be due to change in permalink structure or changing your website url to SSL/non-SSL. Share counts are calculated on the basis of url.
I noticed the same with google plus too. Did a lot of sites change or is this an error?
Google has not changed anything regarding this. It might be due to change in permalink structure or changing your website url to SSL/non-SSL.

Okay, I think that is the issue but unsure of why.
So if I copy the URL exactly from my website and manually share it on my page, all shares, likes, and comments for that post do not register on your bar. If I use auto posters like twitter to facebook, the same thing.
However, if I share it on my page using your toolbar all comments, likes, and shares for that post register on the share bar.
I have the setting of the toolbar for “Url of the web page where icons are located (default)”, so not sure why copying the URL does not register.
Any incite?

Please make sure that you are sharing on your Facebook account timeline, not that of your Facebook page. Did you note the difference?
I thought that at first as facebook wants pages to pay but NO difference. All likes and comments (even my own) count when I use your share bar but not when I post the hyperlink directly.
I know you guys are on point, so I thought, let’s see if they have any idea. I am no expert by any means. However, I guess my question was not so dumb after all =)
It would stink to have to do everything manually. Worse case scenario, I can artificially inflate likes with your bar but I am curious now.
Again, great app and great customer service. I hope you guys do well.
We are simply showing the share counts that official Facebook share API returns.
All likes and comments (even my own) count when I use your share bar but not when I post the hyperlink directly.
Perhaps you are expecting the number of likes (as shown in the image above) of the post that appears on the timeline after sharing, to appear as shares for Facebook share icon. No, it is not supposed to be like this.
Facebook share API counts the number of times a webpage has been shared on Facebook timeline. For example, if you share the page http://factoverfallacy.com/info/happy-marriage-abstinence/ on your Facebook page/timeline once, the number of share will be one for Facebook share icon, regardless of how many likes/comments that post gets at your Facebook timeline (after you share it manually OR using share icon). If someone else shares that webpage on their Facebook timeline OR you share the same webpage again at your timeline, the share count will increase by one. And so on.
We hope, this is clear to you now.Again, great app and great customer service. I hope you guys do well.
Thanks a lot π

Yes, I am expecting that. If I share using your app and then 10 people comment or like, the share count goes up by 20. However if I copy the link directly it does not.
Copied from source:
Beside of that every extra comment made on the internal facebook post increments the share counter as well when the comment is made within the timeline of the commenting user. Additionally we noticed that likes of a post are also taken into account.

The next question about the Facebook Share button is what the difference is when counting shares vs. likes. I had the same question, so I used the links.getStats console for Facebook developers. This means that whenever someone shares, likes or comments on your post on Facebook that it all will be totaled up as likes toward your post!
This guy has the same issue as me and they don’t know why either:

Well, thanks for sharing the info.
It still seems unclear what’s going on behind the scenes. The thing is, we only have the official API to fetch Facebook share counts. So, only thing we can do is to rely on this API and show the share count, it returns πIt is real odd.
Now I know what you developers go thru when trying to find a solution to a bug. Man it is annoying.
If anyone else knows a solution I am all ears.

Okay, I actually found the issue. It seems to be the facebook comment plugin mirror feature. For some reason, it does not count as an engagement.
We have replied to your email.
