Short Code Composing

Any possibility of a step by step guide to composing shortcodes? What is necessary? What is optional? What are parameters and how are they composed.
The reason I ask is, I’m autistic (recently learned that). One of the drawbacks of autism is that we tend to be fussy about what we do. That is, by and large we’re perfectionists. Part of that is a decided reluctance to fail, and that means we can use complete instructions and explanations.
Immediate Goal
To create a series of shortcodes for the Dangerous Journeys system and games. SCs for dice rolling (from 1 to as many as 20) (d3, d5, d6, d10, and d100). SCs for rolling combinations of dice (d3s and d6s for example), SCs for rolling die or dice plus modifiers, and SCs for dice rolling plus showing results of the roll. An example of this last would be a 1d100 roll on the various Socio-Economic Class tables according to the specific DJ game that would indicate what, say, a roll of 38 would mean in terms of a role’s social class.
