The short code works only when that page is reached by a “change your profile link” from a newsletter. The subscriber is not a logged in user so that form cannot show a profile to be edited.

I tried signing up with a Welcome mail enabled. I provided the {profile_url}, so I get a link like this, yet the shortcode still does nothing.
Probably there is an error on documentation or my answers, the short code is [newsletter_profile].

Thank you! That did the trick.
It says [profile_form] in Newsletter settings > Subscription Steps > Profile > Customized profile page (description).
Ah, ok, that is not a shortcode, is a placeholder for newsletter texts. Ok, we need to make the documentation more clear!
