Shortcode causes stalling

I’ve installed everything just like the instructions say. I thought it strange but I had to create folders local/Mage/Core/ on the server for the new functions.php file. Now pages that I’ve tried to include any shortcode just stall and won’t load. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
