Shortcode insertion broken

    When I use the “Add Photo Gallery” button on top of the editor, it sometimes fails to generate a shortcode.

    Instead of the shortcode I would expect, e.g.

    [Best_Wordpress_Gallery id="14" gal_title="ProgrammHighlights19"]

    it puts the following HTML:

    <img class="bwg_shortcode mceItem" title="Best_Wordpress_Gallery id=&quot;9&quot; gal_title=&quot;ProgrammHighlights19&quot;" src="https://.../wp-content/plugins/photo-gallery/images/icons/gallery-icon.png" />

    I’m using version 1.5.14 (WordPress 4.9.9).

    Just upgraded to WordPress 5.0.3 and the issue above persists.

    Sorry, I don’t see how a screenshot would help, my original problem description is pretty comprehensive.
    This issue has been reported before, and apparently is not yet fixed:
