Should permalinks include categories?

    I’ve been changing my “post slug” to set permalinks. The resulting filename includes the year/month/category/name. OK, at the risk of sounding stupid, am I just creating a friendly name and not using permalinks at all? I’d prefer the filename to not include a reference to date or category. After these links get around I can’t change their categories anymore.

    What am I missing?

    OOPS, checking options I see I’ve set custom permalink structure to:
    /%category%/%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%.html

    If I change this will it break existing permalinks?
    If so, are there any quick tricks to storing the “permanent” links so that they are “permanent” since I’ve published them already? That would allow me to reset the structure for the future without affecting the existing ones.
    –AND/OR– is there a way to ensure that when someone goes to the old permalink that they get forwarded to the original post, rather than getting a 404?

    Assuming I use a permalink that doesn’t include date or category info, like domain/blog/page.html, will this still work if I change the posting category?
