That is correct.
If they don’t appear, then no categories are assigned to the items from the category taxonomy. The most likely cause is, that the taxonomy name is different. I you are using a custom post type, then it is most likely a different taxonomy.
You can find the taxonomy name easily, by clicking on the taxonomy editor screen – for example the categories: https://i.imgur.com/VxWjHUr.png
