sidebar length and width

    Hi, I am new to wp, trying to design a news hub area in my home page like this website: http://www.nus.edu.sg/
    I’m thinking to use sidebar since it supports widgets. However the length of the sidebar is not fixed, it goes all the way to the bottom.
    I’m using 2012 theme. So is there a way to make the length of sidebar fixed or any other method to achieve this newshub thing?
