sidebar not working/displaying correctly

I tried creating a theme built on top of the blankslate theme.

There is now a whitespace area for the sidebar, but the content I add to the sidebar (in the widget admin area) does not show as it should (in the right column). In this example the calendar and search shows up below the post down the bottom of the page. Yet in other themes the sidebarcolumn shows correctly (so it doesnt appear to be anything core I may have altered).

I thought maybe there was an unclosed tag. I’ve run it through the w3 validator, with no obvious issues found to cause this.
Also I tested the stock css blankslate file, and the same result happened, so I doubt it is my css.

I’m not sure what else would cause this, any tips?
How can I get content correctly displayed into the right area sidebar?
