SimplyStatic not generating static files, temp-files empty

I’m having a very similar issue to this one: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/topic/simply-static-not-generating-new-static-site-files/

No static files are available in wp-content/uploads/simply-static/temp-files

and the log output is blank.

I’m on PHP 8.1, and I’ve tried with a recent Apache 2.4 and nginx release. I let it churn for 2 hours, but no load on the server and no files generated. This is my first time installing Simply Static on this site. It is a pretty simple WP site, using a simple custom theme.
