1. In order to show the active doc’s category on the left sidebar, you need to use custom CSS. Please use the following custom CSS:
#betterdocs-sidebar .betterdocs-single-category-wrapper.category-grid.active.default.show {
display: block;
}
#betterdocs-sidebar .betterdocs-single-category-wrapper.category-grid.default {
display: none;
}
You can simply add custom CSS by navigating to your WordPress Dashboard -> Appearance -> Customize.

2. I have checked your query. But it’s not totally clear to me. Can you please describe it a bit more? So that I can understand it and get back to you with a good solution. Will you please tell me if you don’t want to show the nested subcategory in the sidebar category list?

Thanks for sharing the screencast with us. It seems that you are using Modern or Abstract layout on your single docs page. Actually, if you use these layouts then you will get the dropdown style. If you want to show without the dropdown, then you need to use Classic, Minimalist, Artisan, Bohemian layout. You can easily change the layout from the Customize option. Navigate to the Customize option form your single doc page. Then navigate to BetterDocs > Single Docs > Layout > from here, you can change the layout > Publish/Update.
