Single Event page displaying the default text

I think I’ve followed the instructions for set up correctly but when I click to view an event I see the default text from the Events page the plugin created.

Steps I took:

1. I’ve chosen the default Events page in the settings.
2. Created a new page and put the shortcode to list events there.
3. Created a template for events and assigned it to a new event
4. When I click on an event from the list I see the plugin created page and not the event details themselves. The permalink is correct.
