Hi, we have been using The Events Calendar with great success on our website for quite some time. However, suddenly, the Calendar is causing our site to crash as soon as the plugin is activated. We have not made any changes – not even added any events – but the hosting company advises us that with the Calendar plugin active, the processor hits over 500% utilisation and then crashes. With the plugin disabled, the site is stable and the host is untroubled.

Is this something that has been experienced elsewhere? I have checked a number of other support threads but haven’t seen anything quite like this.

I am tempted to try reinstalling the plugin, but in case there is something in the database that is causing this behaviour, I would ideally like to completely remove it entirely, rather than leave any files or database tables/entries behind, so that a reinstall would be a completely “clean” version, before attempting to reupload events from a CSV.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please! Thanks in advance for any help offered.

    Hi @sdcbmthsch

Thanks for your response. Could you also provide the URL of your calendar? I want to check it further on my end.

    Hi Darian,

I’d gladly do that, but if I turn the plugin back on the school’s entire website will become unstable and be unusable! The website is http://www.bournemouth-school.org but the calendar is currently disabled with a holding page whilst we attempt to work around this.

If you know of a way I can enable it for debugging without it affecting the rest of the site, I’d be very happy to try that!

    Thanks

    Hi @sdcbmthsch

Upon checking, it seems we have received similar reports from one of our customers when they update to v6.10.2.

Could you try reverting to The Events Calendar v6.10.1, and see if that makes a difference?

So far this seems to have resolve the issue – thank you. We are on version 6.10.1.1 (and auto-update is off!) without the issue reoccurring so far. I will let you know if this changes, however!

Sorry, spoke too soon – within 10 minutes the site was unusable again. I have disabled the plugin once more.

    Hi @sdcbmthsch ,

Thank you for your message, and I’m sorry to hear of the continued difficulties.

At this point, I would recommend creating a copy of your live site to a staging environment, and enable WordPress debugging (see How to Enable Debugging in WordPress) on it. This way, you can share with us the debug log when the “crash” occurs.

    Hi @sdcbmthsch

I hope you’re doing well. I just wanted to touch base and check in with you. It’s been a little while since we’ve heard from you. I was just curious if you had the chance to try out the recommendation provided above.

Let me know if there’s anything I can assist you with.

Hi, apologies for the delay in responding. We don’t have that level of access to the hosting platform I’m afraid (as an educational establishment, we have to look to as many free offerings as we can, and these often come with restrictions). Hence our only viable solution, as the downgrade didn’t work, was to move to another calendar plugin solution, which I have to say has worked perfectly without any of the issues we experienced with TEC. (It even found all the events and categories and imported them automatically!)

I admit to being disappointed to having to stop using TEC – it has been a mainstay of our website since its launch, and has been most flexible and powerful – even in its free form. However, the instabilty introduced in this latest version is clearly a major problem for us as it makes the entire site unsable – and given this has been an issue for at least one other customer, seems to be an issue that is not related to our particular setup. If a long-term, solid fix is established (and proven), then we would be very eager to consider returning to TEC as our calendar solution.

    Thanks for your help.
