I’m trying to track analytics for our brand-new webstories. To do this, we installed the Web Stories plugin last week. Then, we added a new property in GA4, with the URL thinlicious.com/webstories. It gave us a “measurement ID” that starts with G-********

When I tried to insert that measurement ID into the webstories plugin, it gave me the error “Invalid ID Format.”

So, I tried to install Site Kit. But I’m scared to finish the set up with Site Kit, because we’ve been tracking this website’s traffic for 6 months with a GA4 account. If I install Site Kit, it warned me that it will assign a new tracking id and the old one won’t work anymore. Will I lose all six months of analytics if I install Site Kit and replace the old ID with a new one?

Also, can you please explain how to replace my current GA4 tracking on our site so we don’t lose the old information AND it will automatically track Web Stories analytics?

Thank you! I’m not very techy and appreciate your help.

  • @venture1105 Currently, GA4 is not supported in the Web Stories plugin and we recommend setting up and using Universal Analytics (UA) for tracking until it sunsets on July 1, 2023.

We’ll update the plugin settings accordingly to support the transition to GA4.

You can as you mentioned use the Site kit plugin to create and place a GA4 snippet on your site or you could do this yourself manually by following the guides on the Analytics Help Center.

    Luckyna,
How do I set up UA for my blog when it’s already set up with GA4? Will I have to start all over with my site’s analytics and lose all of the data it has compiled so far?

    OR

Is there a way to set up GA just for the webstories and leave my site as GA4?

@venture1105 Your site can use GA4 but your Web Stories will need a Universal Analytics property ID. You can refer to this linked document to create a Universal Analytics property.
