We are unable to connect our website to the Google Site Kit. Once the plugin is installed, clicking the ‘Sign in with Google’ link gives a blank screen with the following error:

“The request to the authentication proxy has failed with an error: request_failed Get help.”

There is no ‘Your site may not be ready…” error message after the pre-setup warning.

We have done the following and the error persists:

    1. Cleared cache
    2. Incognito mode
    3. ‘Reset Site Kit’ on Tools – Available Tools
    4. Troubleshoot Mode, Disable all other plugins
    5. All plugins, WP, themes, PHP are up to date
    6. Made sure it is a live (non staging) site

We will send the site health and other required information through the Site Kit form immediately after posting this topic.

All our other sites have working Site Kit links.
Can you please give us guidance on this issue as we have found no issues on our end that could resolve this.

Thanks for getting in touch @icnapps, and sharing details of the troubleshooting steps you’ve already undertaken. Given the error you’re facing can have a number of causes, some mentioned in this guide, please share the following:

    1. Are you using a custom theme template for your homepage? I ask as your homepage seems much different to the other pages, which don’t seem to have content.
    2. Does the same occur if you refresh your .htaccess file? I ask as I can see htaccess_extra_rules: true from the Site Health information you kindly shared. The quickest way to do so is to visit your permalinks page (Settings > Permalinks) and press the “Save change” button
    3. When using the Health Check * Troubleshooting mode, do you recall having changed themes? If you’re unsure, please attempt set up in troubleshooting once more, ensuring you have the Twenty Twenty Five theme active, which seems to be installed on your site.

Let me know if you have any questions with the above. Thank you.

    Hi James,

Thank you for responding so promptly.

    1. We use an Elementor theme called ‘Hello Elementor’ on the home page. This home page is currently a landing page with no links to the other pages.
    2. I have refreshed the .htaccess file by the given method and the error still occurs
    3. I had not changed to Twenty Twenty Five before whilst using Troubleshooting. I now have while enabling only Site Kit and the error still occurs.

Any more help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Note that I will not be able to respond for another 14 hours as I am on GMT time.

    Thank you,

Appreciate the update @icnapps, and the speedy response. Given the same occurs from the above checks, I suspect something is occurring at host level. To troubleshoot this further, please perform the following steps:

    1. Download this mini-plugin, which allows Site Kit setup over IPv4 instead of IPv6
    2. Upload the plugin file on your site by going to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin
    3. Once installed, click on the Activate button
    4. Try setting up Site Kit again

Alternatively, if preferred, I can provide you with some commands you can run at host level to see if there is a block when accessing the required Site Kit endpoints (sitekit.withgoogle.com).

Let me know how you get on with the above. Thank you.

Hi James, thank you so much, we installed the IPv4 mini plugin above and Site Kit is now connecting. Just in case, if there are any hiccoughs in the first 24 hour initialisation period in terms of tracking and connecting we will reach out again but for now everything seems sorted.

    Many thanks,

Glad to hear it @icnapps, and appreciate the update. I’m happy to keep this support topic open while you check tomorrow or later this week. Hopefully all works as expected. The issue is based on your host not being able to communicate with Site Kit over IPv6 only.

Let me know if you have any questions with the above.

@icnapps I’m just following up to confirm that all remains working as expected with the mini-plugin active to ensure your site is communicating with the Site Kit service over IPv4 only?

As we didn’t receive a response I’ll mark this as resolved. Feel free to open a new support topic if you continue to encounter issues, or reopen this topic and we’d be happy to assist.
