    Hello Support,

I’ve been trying to troubleshoot why my overall sitemap (when I click the link within the General < Features ‘Enable the XML sitemaps that Yoast SEO generates. See the XML sitemap.‘), is showcasing a 404 error on the overall sitemap.

I followed your support articles and found the rewrite rules for “Using NGINX server” (which WP Engine does) – that were sent over to them and they added properly. No change. They themselves told me to reach out to you as they couldn’t tell why this was happening.

I worked with my server-side support WP Engine (they told me to reach out to you), followed all of your knowledgebase articles (see the links I listed below), updated/tested all plugins/themes, etc. – still nothing.

In addition: I was able to pull this website to a staging environment – where the sitemap loaded fine – with all the same plugins/themes etc. It’s just the URL I provided that’s causing problems (which I need solved)

Never encountered this problem before and am stumped on why this keeps happening. Any assistance at all would be greatly appreciated, thanks. I can provide login details privately somehow if you need it (if possible)

  • @dnitzz We understand that you’ve already implemented the rewrite rules on your site that are recommended in the support articles. Can you please also confirm whether you have tried resetting the permalinks? This can be done by performing the following steps:

      • In WordPress, go to Settings>Permalinks
      • Clicking ‘Save Changes’ without making any modifications

We checked on the sitemap and do see it’s generating a 404 at the sitemap_index.xml. However, we also checked the sitemap through the default WordPress permalink and see it is loading at https://www.plattseniorliving.com/?sitemap=1 so this issue does definitely point towards an issue with the permalinks.

    Hi devnihil,

Yes, I have tried resetting the permalinks – I also just did it prior to sending this ticket message (still having the same issue).

I did reach out to my server support and they additionally re-saved the permalinks – no change on that end.

@dnitzz Thanks for your reply. We’d next recommend performing a conflict check to see whether any other plugin/theme is causing an issue with the sitemap.

The fastest way to do this is to deactivate all non-Yoast plugins and switch to a standard theme like Twenty Nineteen. Test this on your development or staging site, if you have one. If not, we recommend using the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin. This plugin allows you to run a conflict check without affecting normal visitors to your site.As we can imagine that you’re unfamiliar with checking for conflicts, we’d like to point you to a step-by-step guide that will walk you through the process: How to check for plugin conflicts.

    Hi devnihil,

I installed the plugin (on my production/live environment) – and still had the same error.

I also moved the site over to development (staging environment) – which DID work – with all the exact same theme and plugins loaded.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi @dnitzz!

It is possible moving it to the staging site may have cleared out some caching.

Does clearing your caching from your theme, plugin, server, CDN like CloudFlare or browser on the live site resolve the issue? If you are not sure how to clear caching from theme/plugin please speak to those authors. If you want to clear cache from the server, please speak to your host provider. To clear the cache from a browser use this guide: https://yoast.com/help/how-to-clear-my-browsers-cache/

If you were to compare the server rules in the staging site and the live site are they both the same? If you are not sure how to check, your host provider can help.
